Recognized dog breed group by American Kennel Club. Herding group includes 25 dog breeds developed to herd livestock.
Working Group breeds were once part of the Herding Group. All herding breeds have the instinctual ability to manipulate the movement of other animals. These breeds were developed to gather, herd, and defend livestock. Some examples are the Belgian Malinois and the German Shepherd Dog, which are now used for police and security work. These intelligent dogs are generally gentle herding their family members, especially the children. Herding breeds are very intelligent and can be trained easily.
