Herding dog’s primary function is to move herds of livestock, typically cattle, sheep or goats. They are not to be confused with livestock guardians, who’s purpose is to protect livestock from predators like wolves. Herding dogs are well known for their impressive learning ability, and they are easily trained to act on people’s body language, whistling or voice commands. Due to their intelligence herding canines are often chosen as family pets as well, especially for kids. Some more popular herding dog breeds are Border Collies, Australian Cattle Dog, Shetland Sheepdog, German Shepherd Dog, and Old English Sheepdog.
